Department of Fertilizers comes under the ambit of Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers which is headed by a Cabinet Minister who is assisted by a Minister of State.
The main objective of Department of Fertilizers is to ensure adequate and timely availability of fertilizers at affordable prices for maximizing agricultural production in the country. The main functions of the Department include planning, promotion and development of the fertilizers industry, planning and monitoring of production, import and distribution of fertilizers and management of financial assistance by way of subsidy / concession for indigenous and imported fertilizers. Early Beginnings
- EID Parry established India's first Single Superphosphate (SSP) plant in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, with a capacity of 6,000 MT per year.
- Ammonium sulphate production as by-product of steel plant began in 1933.
1960
Impact of Bengal Famine
- The famine and the "Grow More Food" campaign emphasized the role of fertilizers in food security.
1965
During 1950-1960s
- The first major public sector fertiliser plant, FCI, Sindri at Jharkhand was established for producing urea and ammonium sulphate nitrate in 1959.
- Nangal Fertilizer Plant (1961) – First Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) plant based on electrolysis of water was commissioned.
